What I Share With Clients Before Their First Visit to Lake Como

Postcard views are only part of the story.

Lake Como is undeniably magical, but it comes with its own set of quirks. Between ferry schedules, traffic patterns, and seasonal closures, it is surprisingly easy to miss the slower, more authentic side of the lake if your trip is not planned with intention.

I hear far too many stories of travelers missing ferries, getting stranded between towns, or arriving to discover that their hotel or favorite restaurant is closed for the season. These are the insights I wish everyone had while planning, and the professional tips that truly make the difference.

Not Every Iconic Hotel Is the Right Fit

Villa d’Este is legendary, and for some travelers, it is absolutely the right choice. But it is not for everyone. Many of my clients end up enjoying a quieter, more walkable town such as Menaggio, where the pace feels more personal and local. Grand Hotel Victoria is consistently a favorite.

The Lake Is Bigger Than It Looks

Ferries are beautiful, but they are not always the most efficient way to get around. Distances between towns are often underestimated, and travelers lose valuable time assuming locations are closer than they actually are. Strategic planning matters here.

Dinner Reservations Matter

Restaurants book quickly, especially in summer. Planning ahead includes not just securing a table, but also thinking through transportation afterward. My number one recommendation? Il Gatto Nero.

Timing Your Trip Is Everything

The ideal travel window is May through September, or planning very carefully outside of it. During the shoulder and off-seasons, many restaurants, hotels, and shops close or operate on limited schedules. Summer is busy for a reason: ferries run frequently, businesses are open, and the energy around the lake is vibrant.

Some of the Best Views Come With Lunch

Even if you are not staying at a lakefront hotel, book a lunch or aperitivo with a view. It is an essential part of the Lake Como experience, especially in Bellagio.

Consider a Private Boat Experience

Public ferry lines can become long and crowded in peak season. A private boat tour allows you to explore hidden villas and quieter corners of the lake at your own pace. It is a splurge, but an unforgettable one. If boats are not your preference, an e-bike experience is an excellent alternative.

Plan Your Return to Milan Thoughtfully

Summer traffic is no joke. I often recommend building in a final night or two in Milan to avoid unnecessary stress and to experience highlights such as The Last Supper.
